Please pick up your litter!Īs a beach Mustang Island State Park is…well, just a beach. We would like to return to kayak in Fish Pass when it is less windy. While there, visit nearby beach town of Port Aransas for dining or shopping and take a drive down to the amazing Padre Island National Seashore. I do appreciate that the state park strives to minimize its footprint on the precious prairie/dune natural area. There is a large stretch of beach that allows beach camping if that's your desire. Although ample trash receptacles are all around, we were disappointed how visitors leave trash in the parking lot and on the beach around the tables, which attracts swarms of annoying seagulls. The beach is about 1/3 mile from campground, but there is no walking path- you have to go down the road but there is a big parking lot.
It appears the friendly staff is doing the best they can at this time while waiting for the new building. At this time, there is no visitors center or camp store, but a large facility is under construction and will be nice when complete. The rest rooms/ showers are large, updated, & very clean. Considering how everyone is just lined up, it was pleasantly quiet as each site backs up to the "coastal prairie", where the most noticeable sounds are birds and the distant surf so we did get a feeling of being somewhere different & wild. The sites are flat, grassy, with covered tables and water & electrical hook-ups conveniently located.
Although located within sight of the highway, we did not hear traffic sounds & only barely noticed the lights at night. The campground is really just a big flat windy parking lot with no trees and everybody just lined up side by side. We camped here 2 nights in early April 2021 in a 26 foot travel trailer. Overall this is a great place for a short stay.
